What Is an Amazon FBA Prep Center? Seller Guide
Learn what an Amazon FBA prep center does, how preparation works in Spain and when outsourcing receiving, labeling and packing makes sense.

Introduction: more SMEs on Amazon… and more logistics chaos
More Spanish SMEs and independent sellers use Amazon FBA as a sales channel. The platform can support sales in several European markets while Amazon handles fulfilment after stock is checked in.
The problem appears when the business actually starts to grow.
Boxes all over the living room, labels everywhere, packing late at night, mistakes in shipments, returns poorly handled… Preparing every single unit for FBA by yourself looks “free”, but in reality it eats up your time, your energy and your space.
This is where a concept many sellers still don’t fully understand becomes really important: the FBA prep center.
In this article I’ll explain, in simple language, what a prep center is, how it works in real life and when it makes sense to work with one if you sell on Amazon from Spain.
What is an FBA prep center (in simple terms)?
An FBA prep center is a product preparation facility that specialises in Amazon. It’s not just any warehouse: its daily job is to receive your goods, check them, prepare them according to Amazon’s requirements and send them to the FBA warehouses you’ve set up from your Seller Central account.
In a prep center, among other things, they handle:
✓ Receiving the cartons your supplier sends.
✓ Counting and doing a basic visual inspection of each unit.
✓ Contacting you if there are any issues (damaged units, supplier labels, etc.).
✓ Applying FNSKU labels.
✓ Bagging or wrapping items in film when the product requires it.
✓ Sealing the product where necessary.
✓ Removing or covering manufacturer barcodes.
✓ Preparing shipping cartons so they meet Amazon’s size and packing rules.
✓ Applying the box and carrier labels supplied for the confirmed shipment.
✓ Handing over the cartons to the carrier within the agreed time.
The idea is that you create the shipment in Seller Central and send the labels in PDF, and the prep center takes care of everything that is physical.
How a prep center works in practice (FBA Pinatar example)
To make it clearer, this is what a typical experience looks like when working with a prep center such as FBA Pinatar Logísticas:
1. Your supplier ships the goods to the prep center
Instead of receiving pallets or boxes at your home or small warehouse, your supplier sends them directly to the prep center’s facilities. This way you don’t even need to touch the product yourself if you don’t want to.
2. Receiving and basic inspection
The prep center receives the boxes, registers them and counts the merchandise. Then they carry out a basic visual inspection of the units:
✓ Did the products arrive in good condition?
✓ Are there crushed or heavily dented boxes?
✓ Is any external packaging torn or damaged?
If visible damage or a quantity difference is found, the prep center reports it through the communication method agreed with the seller so the affected units can be approved, held or excluded before processing.
3. Preparing the individual units
Once you approve, the preparation phase starts:
✓ The team applies the FNSKU labels you generated in Seller Central and sent as a PDF.
✓ Units that need it are bagged (for example loose products that must be grouped, textiles, toys with small parts, etc.).
✓ Products that must go to Amazon fully closed are sealed.
✓ Manufacturer barcodes are removed or covered, so that Amazon only scans the FNSKU linked to your listing.
The agreed operations should follow the current instructions supplied for that product and shipment, reducing avoidable labelling and packaging errors.
4. Preparing the shipping cartons
When all units are ready, the team prepares the boxes that will go to the different FBA warehouses Amazon has assigned in your shipment plan.
Original supplier cartons may be reused when they remain suitable for the confirmed shipment; old labels must be removed or covered and reinforcement or replacement cartons agreed when required.
The goals are:
✓ Stay within Amazon’s size and weight limits.
✓ Protect the contents properly.
✓ Keep packaging and transport costs under control.
5. Shipping labels and handover to UPS
Finally, each box receives:
✓ Amazon / UPS shipping labels.
✓ Weight or handling warnings when the current shipment requirements call for them.
✓ Any other necessary markings (fragile, liquid, flammable, etc.).
Once everything is ready, the prep center hands the boxes to the agreed carrier within the time frame confirmed for that inbound operation.
The seller receives the processing and handover status through the communication method agreed before stock arrives.
What problem does a prep center really solve?
From the outside, it may look like it’s just about “sticking labels on boxes”. In practice, a well-organised prep center solves several issues at the same time:
1. Time
Preparing a full shipment takes much more time than it seems:
✓ Printing and cutting labels.
✓ Sorting units, bagging and sealing.
✓ Building cartons, filling gaps, reinforcing boxes.
✓ Sticking labels on products and boxes.
✓ Double-checking everything matches the shipment plan.
As monthly volume grows, preparation can consume time that the seller could use for product research, listing improvements and supplier management. Compare that internal workload with the complete external preparation scope before deciding.
2. Space
Having your living room or small storage area packed with boxes, rolls of film, tape and labels is far from ideal. And if you share that space with your family or another business, it’s even worse.
A prep center allows you to externalise the physical mess and run your business much lighter.
3. Errors
Poorly labelled boxes, FNSKU stickers placed over folds, wrong dimensions, products sent to the wrong FBA warehouse… Every mistake can lead to delays, extra fees or inventory being held.
A defined receiving, identification and approval process helps reduce errors and keeps the physical work aligned with the current shipment instructions.
4. Peace of mind during peak seasons
Product launches, Black Friday, Christmas, Prime Day… When demand spikes, you can’t afford to run out of stock because you don’t have enough time to prep your shipments.
With a prep center you can plan larger shipments and know they’ll be processed within the agreed time frame.
When does it start to make sense to use a prep center?
Every business is different, but there are clear signs that the moment has arrived:
✓ Your monthly preparation volume is taking too much time away from product and sales work.
✓ You’re starting to turn down product opportunities because you “can’t face” prepping more inventory.
✓ You’ve had incidents with Amazon related to incorrect labelling or packaging.
✓ You don’t want to rent a warehouse or hire staff for such an operational part of the business.
✓ You import directly from factories (for example in China) and would like the goods to go straight to a location in Spain that takes care of everything.
If several of these situations apply, compare the full cost and scope of external preparation with the time, space and materials required to continue processing stock internally.
Why work with a prep center in Spain like FBA Pinatar
✓ A pricing model adjusted to each client according to the product, monthly volume and physical operations, with materials or exceptional handling confirmed before stock arrives.
Conclusion: it’s not just logistics, it’s the freedom to grow
An FBA prep center is not simply “a warehouse that sticks labels on boxes”. It’s a partner that helps you:
✓ Free up time so you can focus on products, pricing and marketing.
✓ Scale your shipment volume without overwhelming your personal life or your space.
✓ Reduce errors and Amazon issues related to poor preparation.
✓ Keep a flexible operation by agreeing the preparation scope and monthly volume before each inbound cycle.
If you’re selling on Amazon and feel increasingly surrounded by boxes instead of opportunities, it’s probably time to consider working with a prep center in Spain such as FBA Pinatar Logísticas.
You continue to create shipments and control stock inside Seller Central. The prep center performs only the physical operations agreed in advance and needs the correct labels, quantities and instructions before processing begins. Contact FBA Pinatar by WhatsApp or email; the prep-center address is shared only after the collaboration and inbound process have been agreed.
